Why this recipe works
Smoothie bowls are a delightful and customizable way to fuel your morning. You simply blend a base of fruits and liquid, pour it into a bowl, and crown it with your favorite toppings. You have full control to make it as nutrient-dense or as indulgent as you wish.
This particular bowl gets its stunning golden hue and anti-inflammatory benefits from turmeric powder. Combined with the natural sweetness of mango and the creaminess of avocado, it creates a perfectly balanced and satisfying meal. The black pepper is a crucial addition, as it significantly enhances the bioavailability of curcumin, the active compound in turmeric.
By using frozen mango and a frozen avocado, we achieve a thick, spoonable consistency without the need for ice, which can water down the flavor. The addition of protein powder makes it a truly filling and balanced breakfast.
A quick note on prep: this recipe requires freezing the mango and avocado beforehand. I recommend preparing large batches and storing them in freezer-safe bags for quick and easy morning prep.
For toppings, the possibilities are endless. Fresh fruit adds freshness, while nuts and seeds provide a satisfying crunch. A drizzle of nut or seed butter makes it extra decadent. See the recipe below for more inspiration.
This bowl is also great for meal prep—just freeze it in an airtight container for a ready-to-go breakfast.
What You Need
Ingredients:
1 cup unsweetened almond milk or coconut water, plus more as needed
1 ½ cups frozen mango chunks
½ frozen avocado, pitted and scooped (freeze overnight)
1.5 scoops unflavored or vanilla protein powder (collagen or plant-based)
1 teaspoon ground turmeric
⅛ teaspoon black pepper (activates the turmeric)
1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
Topping Ideas:
Fresh Fruit: sliced banana, berries, kiwi, passion fruit, or more mango
Nuts & Seeds: sliced almonds, chopped pecans, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, or hemp hearts
Nut/Seed Butters: almond butter, cashew butter, or tahini
Other: cacao nibs, unsweetened coconut flakes, bee pollen (if not strictly vegan)
Equipment:
Jooccy portable blender
Measuring cups and spoons
A spatula
A cutting board
A chef’s knife or paring knife
Instruction
Add the almond milk, frozen mango, and frozen avocado to the blender. Blend on high until smooth and creamy. If the mixture is too thick for your blender to process, add more liquid one tablespoon at a time. Use the spatula to scrape down the sides as needed.
Add the protein powder, ground turmeric, black pepper, and fresh ginger (if using) to the blender. Blend again until everything is fully incorporated and smooth. Check the consistency; if it's still too thick, blend in a bit more liquid.
Pour the smoothie into a bowl. Arrange your chosen toppings artfully over the top and enjoy immediately!
